The luxury Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius is currently anchored following a deadly outbreak of Hantavirus that has claimed three lives among its 149 passengers and crew, including a Dutch couple and a German national. The ship, which carried travelers from 23 different countries—including two Indians—reportedly lacked isolation measures for 12 days after the first death, as authorities initially dismissed it as a natural occurrence. The virus, typically transmitted through rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, is suspected to have been contracted before boarding in Argentina or Chile, though passengers continued to mingle and share meals throughout the voyage. Health experts warn that the virus can cause severe respiratory and kidney failure with a mortality rate of up to 40%, and because there is no specific vaccine or cure, treatment is limited to managing symptoms like fever, body aches, and breathing difficulties. Authorities are now urgently attempting to track passengers who disembarked at various ports during the journey to prevent further spread of this emerging health threat.
