Kerala Political Crisis

Following a crushing defeat in the Kerala assembly elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) faces a severe crisis regarding upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, as their reduced strength of 35 seats falls short of the 36-vote requirement to secure even a single representative. This precarious position might necessitate unexpected support from the BJP, while the United Democratic Front (UDF), bolstered by its commanding 102 seats, is poised to sweep all future vacancies in 2027 and 2028. Additionally, internal strife has erupted within the Kerala Congress (M), with members openly blaming Minister Roshy Augustine for the party’s total wipeout across all 12 contested seats and alleging that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan used intimidation to prevent the party from defecting to the UDF. The catastrophic electoral performance has not only weakened the LDF’s parliamentary presence but also triggered a wave of instability within its key ally parties.
