Police Commissioner V. Sumathi IPS

In a bold social experiment to gauge the safety of women in Hyderabad, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner V. Sumathi IPS spent three hours disguised as an ordinary bus passenger at the busy Dilsukhnagar bus stand. Between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM, she was harassed by approximately 40 men, including students and private sector professionals, who approached her with lewd comments and inappropriate questions unaware of her identity. Plainclothes officers stationed nearby apprehended the harassers as the Commissioner signaled them, revealing that even highly educated individuals and those under the influence of alcohol were among the offenders. Rather than filing immediate criminal charges, the police opted to provide counseling and awareness sessions to educate these men on public decency and women’s safety rights. This direct intervention by Sumathi IPS highlights the harrowing ground reality of public spaces for women and serves as a significant model for proactive policing and social reform.
