The Rice Trap

Kerala has emerged as the “Diabetes Capital of India,” with one in four individuals suffering from the condition—a rate three times the national average. This health crisis is largely attributed to the “Rice Trap,” where modern Malayalis maintain the high-carbohydrate diet of their physically hardworking ancestors despite leading sedentary lifestyles. While some have attempted to reduce rice intake, many have mistakenly replaced it with even more harmful refined flour (maida) products like parottas and bakery snacks, leading to rising obesity and insulin resistance. Health experts advocate for the “Plate Method,” where 50% of a meal consists of non-starchy vegetables, 25% protein, and only 25% carbohydrates like red matta rice, which has a lower glycemic index. Combined with daily physical activity like brisk walking, these dietary adjustments are essential for Keralites to reclaim their health and combat the alarming rise in lifestyle diseases.
